Bronchiolitis

At only 6 weeks old, Hugo caught his first cold. When his cough got worse we took him to the doctor to check on him. Unfortunately, the doctor confirmed that this did not seem like a common cough, but that Hugo needed to be examined by a pediatrician at the hospital.

Going to the doctor

The local hospital is only a 10 minute walk from the doctor’s office and we took Hugo straight away to the Accidents and Emergency Department (A&E). They connected a sensor to his toe, measuring his oxygen levels (and making his toe glow bright red). Oh no, Hugo’s oxygen levels were slightly low. So they decided to give Hugo oxygen over a mask and to keep us at the A&E for several hours for observation.

When Hugo’s oxygen levels remained low over several hours, it was decided that he had to stay at the hospital. We were admitted to the pediatric floor, and Hugo got little tubes in his nose for easier oxygen supply. Poor little baby. It broke our hearts to see him like that.

Admitted to the pediatric ward

While Martina was staying overnight with Hugo at the hospital, Harish had to return home alone. Next morning, he came to visit and brought much needed clothes, diapers, toiletries and snacks (since we had come to the hospital completely unprepared, not knowing that we would have to stay for several days).

Even though his parents were worried about him, Hugo was in a great mood, alert, interested in his surroundings and smiling a lot.

After three nights at the hospital, Hugo was finally able to breathe well on his own again. All tubes and wires were removed and we were allowed to go home.
